Birds of the Wairarapa and where to see them
Onoke Spit

The Onoke Spit provides the birdwatcher with a chance to study gulls and terns up close, especially in the early summer when three species, including the globally-rare Caspian Tern, nest at the eastern end of the Spit.

This wonderful 5 km long sand spit is accessed by road from the western side of lake Wairarapa and culminates a trip through some spectacular forest and wetlands. It is a natural destination for a good day trip, but be prepared for hot winds and a searing sun in summer. There are no close facilities so bring food and liquids.
