In addition to the pivotal role played by the Centre in captive breeding
of endangered bird species,
Mt. Bruce Wildlife Centre has perhaps done
more to raise awareness of New Zealand native birds than any other facility in the region,
and perhaps New Zealand. Conveniently located on the main highway through the region,
Mt. Bruce provides us with a small window on what the native lowland forest was once like.
A camera is a must here as you will get unprecedented views of many rare species,
including Takahe, the species that launched the place to fame.
