One of the major results of this involvement was the creation of the Lagoa do Peixe National Park on the southern coast in 1986. As a major wintering and stopover area, it was included in the WHSRN in 1990 as an site of international importance and designated as Ramsar Convention (the Convention on the Internationally Important Wetlands) in 1993.
The Reentrâncias Maranhenses were established on the Maranhão state side as an Environmental Protection Area by the state and also joined the WHSRN as a hemispheric site in 1991 and again indicated by Brazil as a Ramsar site in 1993.
Besides the study and protection measures for both areas, it is worthwhile to mention that there are also a training center for biologists in basic field techniques, including banding, surveys, identification and other points. Students and professionals had been attended the training workshops or jointed the CEMAVE'S expeditions to both areas. Brazilians and other Latin American countries applicants has been trained, with a majority of people for the southern part of the continent (namely uruguayans, argentinians, and chileans) as well as peruvians, although even Central America's countries have sent representatives.
Actually, the major activities are:
